Ascension Roofing & Siding replaces and repairs roofs across Elk River, from the older neighborhoods near downtown and Lake Orono to the newer developments on the southeast side. We’re a local Sherburne and Isanti County company, we’ve replaced more than 700 roofs, and we’ve been doing this since 2007.
Roof Replacement in Elk River
Elk River has about 10,300 homes, and close to 80 percent of them are owner-occupied (City of Elk River). The median Elk River home was built in 1995 (BestNeighborhood), which means a great many of them are on their first or second roof right now. An asphalt roof in Minnesota generally lasts 15 to 25 years, so if you bought your Elk River home used and have never replaced the roof, it’s worth knowing where you stand before the next storm tells you.
Here’s what a replacement with us looks like:
- Free inspection. We get on the roof, photograph what we find, and show you the pictures.
- A written price for the whole job — not a per-square number you have to do math on.
- Permit pulled. We file it with the City of Elk River. You don’t chase paperwork.
- Ice and water barrier to code. Elk River requires it from the eaves to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line, and we install it on every replacement.
- Full tear-off and decking inspection. Soft or rotted decking gets replaced, not covered over.
- Attic ventilation corrected. Bad intake and exhaust cooks a roof from underneath. We fix it during the replacement.
- New step and wall flashing. We don’t reuse old flashing. Reused flashing is one of the most common sources of leaks we get called out for.
- One to two days on site for most Elk River homes, then a magnetic nail sweep and full cleanup.
- 5-year workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer’s material warranty.
Asphalt Shingle Installation
Asphalt shingles are what most Elk River homes have and what most homeowners choose again. They’re the best balance of cost, appearance and performance for Minnesota. We install architectural shingles in a full range of colors, plus impact-resistant shingles that stand up better to hail and can qualify you for a discount with some insurance companies. We’ll bring samples to the house and show you what they look like against your siding and trim.
Shingle Roof Repair in Elk River
Not every roof needs replacing. Missing shingles after a wind event, a leak around a chimney or skylight, failed pipe boots, ice dam damage at the eaves — those are repairs, and we do them. We’ll tell you honestly when a repair makes sense and when you’d be putting money into a roof that’s near the end anyway. Plenty of our Elk River customers started with a repair call.
Metal Roofing in Elk River
Metal is a strong fit out here, especially on acreage homes, hobby farms, shops and pole buildings. A metal roof sheds snow instead of holding it, stands up to hail and wind, and commonly lasts 40 to 70 years. We install standing seam, metal and stone-coated shingles, corrugated panels and exposed-fastener panels, and we’ll walk you through the trade-offs of each rather than pushing one.
See our metal roofing page for panel types and what to expect.
Hail and Storm Damage
Elk River sits in a high-frequency hail area. There have been 107 hail reports within ten miles of the city since 2004, most of them in May, June and July (Stormersite). Just after midnight on July 14, 2024, hail up to 4 inches across fell in Big Lake and Monticello, right next door (National Weather Service). Hail damage often isn’t visible from the ground: the shingle looks fine but the mat underneath is bruised, and the roof fails a few years later.
We inspect, photograph and document what’s actually there. If you have a legitimate claim, we’ll meet your adjuster at the house and handle the claim paperwork with you. If you don’t, we’ll tell you that instead of talking you into filing.
Siding Repair and Installation in Elk River
The same storm that takes out a roof usually takes out siding on the hard-hit side of the house. We repair and replace vinyl, fiber cement, composite and metal siding, so one company handles the whole exterior and one claim can cover all of it. We do gutters and windows too.
Commercial Roofing in Elk River
We work on commercial buildings, churches, shops and agricultural buildings throughout Sherburne County, including commercial metal roofing. If you manage a property in Elk River and need an honest assessment of what it needs and what it’ll cost, call us for an inspection.

Elk River Roofing FAQs
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Elk River?
Yes. The City of Elk River requires a permit for all residential reroofing, and a contractor who pulls it must hold a Minnesota state license. We’re licensed (BC753558) and pull the permit as part of the job.
Can you put new shingles over my old roof in Elk River?
Elk River allows up to two layers of asphalt shingles before a tear-off is required. We still recommend a full tear-off, because it’s the only way to find and fix soft decking before the new roof goes on.
How much does a new roof cost in Elk River?
Most residential roof replacements run roughly $8,000 to $30,000, depending on the size and pitch of the roof, how many layers come off, decking repairs and the material you pick. We give you a written price for the whole job after we’ve been up on the roof. Financing is available through Service Finance.
How long does a roof replacement take?
Most Elk River homes are a one- to two-day job, from tear-off to cleanup.
My neighbors are getting new roofs after the hail. Should I file a claim?
Get an inspection first. Hail damage usually isn’t visible from the ground, and filing a claim with nothing to find isn’t worth it. We’ll document what’s actually on your roof and tell you either way.
Can you repair just part of my roof?
Yes. We do repairs, including small ones. If your roof has years left, a repair is the right answer, and we’ll say so.
Can you replace my roof in the winter?
We don’t install roofs in Minnesota winter. Shingles need warmth to seal properly, and installing them in the cold can void the warranty. If you have damage now, we’ll tarp it and make emergency repairs, then schedule the replacement for spring.
