Quick answer: Most residential roof replacements take 1 to 2 days. A typical Minnesota home with one layer of shingles is often torn off and re-roofed in a single day. Larger or steeper roofs, multiple layers, rotted decking or bad weather can stretch it to a second day or longer.

What happens during a roof replacement, step by step?

  1. Permits and materials. We pull the necessary permits before the job and have materials delivered, usually a day or two ahead.
  2. Protect your property. The crew covers landscaping, AC units and siding, and sets up tarps to catch debris.
  3. Tear-off. The old shingles, underlayment and flashing come off down to the roof deck.
  4. Decking inspection. We check every section of the wood deck and replace soft or rotted boards so the new roof sits on a solid base.
  5. Underlayment and ice barrier. Ice and water shield goes along the eaves and valleys, then synthetic underlayment covers the rest of the deck. In Minnesota, this is your main defense against ice dams.
  6. Flashing and ventilation. We install new step and wall flashing (we never reuse the old flashing) and correct attic ventilation so the roof can breathe.
  7. Shingles and ridge. The new shingles, ridge caps and vents go on.
  8. Cleanup and walk-through. The crew hauls away debris, runs a magnet over the yard and driveway for nails, and walks the job with you.

What can make a roof replacement take longer?

  • Weather: rain, high winds or a cold snap pause the job. We won’t leave your home open to the weather.
  • Multiple layers: tearing off two or three layers of old shingles adds time.
  • Rotted decking: extra deck replacement adds hours, sometimes a day.
  • Size and pitch: big, steep or cut-up roofs with many valleys and dormers take longer.
  • Material: metal roofing and specialty products take longer to install than asphalt shingles.

Do I need to be home during the roof replacement?

No. Most homeowners go about their day. We do ask that you:

  • Move cars out of the garage and driveway the night before
  • Take wall hangings down on walls that share the roof line, since hammering can shake them
  • Keep kids and pets away from the work area
  • Cover stored items in the attic, because a little dust can fall during tear-off

FAQ

Can a roof be replaced in one day?

Yes. Many single-layer roofs on average-size Minnesota homes are finished in one day. Larger or more complex roofs usually take two.

Will it be loud?

Yes, tear-off and nailing are noisy, especially during the first few hours. Most people work from another room or leave for the day.

What happens if it rains during my roof replacement?

We watch the forecast closely and only open as much roof as we can cover the same day. If weather moves in, we dry it in with underlayment and tarps before we leave.

Do you clean up after?

Yes. We haul away all debris and run magnetic sweepers over your yard and driveway to pick up nails.
